I refer to Frank Salt’s opinion piece ‘Friendly Maltese’ (December 21).

Permit me to point out one detail. I can understand the writer’s noble intention when advertising Malta to the world (and, possibly, beyond). But can he please do so by omitting to include the very sort of interpretation of historical events that local historians, lecturers and jurists have tried hard to avoid? Its tone and the manner in which it tries to ‘link’ the all but aleatory events referred to only reveals the sort of obsequious sentiment that is so often mistaken for friendliness.
