Floriana and Birkirkara have reached an agreement in principal for a swap deal that would see Clayton Failla head to the Stripes with Edward Herrera heading into the other direction, the Times of Malta confirmed on Wednesday.

The Greens, after a very disappointing start to the season that has seen them end the first round languishing in ninth place in the standings, are looking to rejuvenate their squad as they bid to climb the standings and try to close the gap on the teams battling for a place in Europe.

Last week, Floriana already announced the signing of two new Argentine players, namely midfielder Gaston Ezequiel Cesani, who came through the youth ranks of River Plate, and attacking midfielder Ulises Jesus Arias, formerly of Lanus.

Yesterday it was confirmed that Floriana and Birkirkara have reached an agreement that would see them complete a swap deal involving Failla and Herrera who both have struggled for first-team football at their respective clubs this season.

It is understood that Herrera has already held talks with the Greens and if the deal goes through he will put pen to paper on a three-year contract.

If the transfer is finalized Herrera will become Floriana’s third signing when the winter window reopens next week.

But that is unlikely to be Floriana’s last piece of building as the Greens are planning to bring a new forward as they look to bolster coach Guido Ugolotti’s attacking options.

The signing of a new striker would help the club to fill the void left by the potential departure of Juninho Cabral and Maurizio Vella next month.

It is understood that Cabral is attracting the interest of a number of clubs, two from the BOV Premier League, two from Gozo and one from Macedonia.

Steve Pisani is another Floriana player who is set to leave the club next week as it is understood that he is closing in on joining Premier League rivals Balzan.

Talks between the two Premier League clubs have been ongoing in the last two weeks and it thought that the transfers should be made official when the transfer window reopens on Wednesday.

Balzan are also in search of a new central defender as they look to replace the departing Harry Ascroft who left the club last week.

Mosta could be another club to be involved in the market next month.

After last month they signed two new overseas players, namely midfielder Davy N'Guessan and strikers Akeem Roach, coach Mark Miller is in the market to bring a new midfielder.

The Blues are awaiting the arrival of an English and an Italian midfielder in the coming days before taking a final decision on who to register.
