Man, 28, killed in Qormi

A 28-year-old man from Qormi was shot dead in his hometown early yesterday morning in what seems to have been a crime of passion.

The murder took place in Drama Street when Stephan Caruana surprised Neville Baldacchino on the terrace overlooking the backyard of Mr Caruana’s house and fired, what a neighbour said, were four shots not in rapid succession.

Mr Caruana’s wife and four children were in the house at the time.

Sources close to the investigation said the victim was hit three times and died on the spot.

Mr Caruana, also 28, was arrested soon after the shooting which took place some time before 1am. He was under interrogation at length yesterday.

The sources said that Mr Caruana fetched his shotgun when he heard noises in the backyard. He spotted a man and fired four shots in his direction, hitting Mr Baldacchino three times.

Duty Magistrate Antonio Mizzi is carrying out an inquiry.

This was the fifth murder this year and the second fatal shooting in just over a week.

GWU starts strike actions pressing Budget claims

Grand Harbour, Marsaxlokk and the Freeport were close to commercial shipping yesterday in the first of a series of industrial actions by the General Workers’ Union, which is pressing claims it says were turned down in the Budget. Yesterday’s action was by harbour pilots and mooringmen, members of Pilotage and Mooring Corps., who went out on a 24-hour strike from 6am.

Passenger ships were excluded from the action. The strike affected four ships, the GWU said. The union said the government had not accepted most of its proposals, including a request for a non-taxable cost-of-living wage increase of Lm2.50.

Minister intervenes in electricity workers’ strike

A conciliation meeting is to be held this morning when the Government Section of the General Workers’ Union and the Malta Electricity Board in an effort to end the strike of industrial and clerical employees called by the Section and NACSS on December 12.

The conciliation meeting was arranged by Dr V. Tabone, Minister of Labour, Employment and Welfare, after he had a one-and-a-half hour meeting with the Government Section yesterday morning. A spokesman for the Government Section described the meeting with the Minister as “exploratory”.

The strike of industrial and clerical employees was called in support of 10 claims, including the introduction of a pension scheme and an increase in shift allowance.

A delegation from the Government Section crossed over from Gozo yesterday to inform the men on strike of the latest developments.

It is understood that 57 per cent of the clerical workers have reported to work.

Information on the conciliation meeting to be held this morning will be given to the men on strike at a meeting to be held this afternoon at the Workers’ Memorial Building in Valletta.
