A British construction supplies company bid for the right to name a newly-discovered amphibian, and dedicated it to Donald Trump.

EnviroBuild has supported the Rainforest Trust for some time and its owners said that they were intrigued by the opportunity to bid in an auction for the right to name new species of flora and fauna discovered in rainforests being protected through their donations.

The company won with a €22,000 bid and named the Panamanian amphibian Dermophis donaldtrumpi, after Donald Trump, as a not-so-subtle dig at his refusal to accept the reality of climate change.

Caecilians are named after the Latin Caecus meaning “blind”, and have rudimentary eyes which can only detect light or dark. Donald Trump, the company said in its media release, is “only capable of seeing the world in black and white” and claims that climate change is a hoax by the Chinese.

“The dermophis genus grows an extra layer of skin which their young use their teeth to peel off and eat, a behaviour known as dermatrophy. As a method of ensuring their children survive in life Donald Trump prefers granting them high roles in the Oval Office.

“The amphibians live almost entirely underground, believed to have lost their limbs at least 60 million years ago, as an adaptation to burrowing. Burrowing its head underground helps Donald Trump when avoiding scientific consensus on anthropogenic climate change and also appointed several energy lobbyists to the Environment Agency, where their job is to regulate the energy industry,” the release continues.

Also taking digs at the alleged interference of Russia in US elections, the company said that while it was not overtly political, it felt “everyone should do everything they can to leave the world in a better way than they found it”.

The Rainforest Trust auction raised €160,000 for conservation.
