Politicians under investigation in connection with corruption allegations should suspend themselves immediately and a top police officer married to a cabinet minister should be booted from the FIAU, a civil society group said on Saturday.

In a statement issued one day before the UN International Day against Corruption, Repubblika said corruption had become institutionalised with “institutional inaction towards individuals facing corruption allegations, sometimes even despite concrete evidence of their wrongdoing”.

The protest group listed a number of demands it wanted authorities to comply with, from releasing a full copy of the Egrant inquiry to explanations from Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri “as to why they  were to receive €5,000 daily from 17 Black owner Yorgen Fenech, who is also a shareholder in the Electrogas consortium” and for assistant police commissioner Silvio Valletta to be removed from any role he held within the FIAU.

Mr Valletta, who serves on the FIAU board, is married to Gozo minister Justyne Caruana. A constitutional court has ruled that he must play no part in the investigation into Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder – an investigation he was initially in charge of.

Repubblika also called on the government to release full copies of the contracts concerning the privatisation of three state hospitals as well as a full copy of the contract to build a new power station, and said people also needed to know what authorities had done to bring masterminds of Ms Caruana Galizia’s murder to justice.

“It’s with a sense of sadness that we write such a statement,” the recently-formed group said. “There should never be the need for civil society to make such demands”.
