A talk entitled Il-Bniedem u t-Teknologija, min hu s-sid, min hu l-ilsir? (Man and Technology, who is the master, who is the slave?), organised by the Philosophy Sharing group, will be delivered today at 6.30pm by Martin Debattista at the premises of the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, Valletta.

Ever since the discovery of fire and the invention of the wheel, man has always sought to dominate his surroundings by using his intelligence and improving the technology he uses in every sphere of life.

In the past 200 years alone there have been huge advances, includingthe realisation of man’s dream to fly, the harnessing of atomic energy and the technology of computers and artificial intelligence.

The increasingly rapid pace of technological development has led some to warn that scenarios such as those depicted in films like The Matrix, The Terminator and Blade Runner will eventually become real.

Are we approaching the stage where technology is becoming man’s master?

What indications of this can we already see today?

Debattista will animate his presentation with a number of cartoons to help stimulate discussion on the theme.

Martin Debattista’s presentation will be delivered today from 6.30 to 8pm at the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, 181, Melita Street, Valletta. Admission is free. For updates, visit https://www.facebook.com/events/199143707668846 .
