New energy rates: Families will save €27 a year

The revised energy bills should mean an average annual drop of €27 a year for most households when compared to the original tariffs proposed by the government, according to an audit report leaked to The Times. The latest deal struck over the energy bills is still in the balance as most of the unions in the bloc that negotiated the latest revision are still questioning the announced final version.

The figures showing the reduction were never published because the Malta Resources Authority is verifying the audit report drawn up by KPMG.

No sign of the milkman

Many housewives yesterday morning waited in vain for the milkman to turn up. They first thought he might have been taken ill or that he had been delayed at the MMU Centre in Ħamrun. But the reason was all milk agents went out on an ‘unofficial’ strike.

The milk agents – about 40 in all – complained they were not given the usual supplies of ricotta. They claimed officials at the centre told them early in the morning that they had to distribute the ricotta to hospitals.

A delegation from the Government Section of the General Workers’ Union later in the morning met officials from the Milk Marketing Undertaking to discuss the dispute.

Talented artist’s tragic death

The news of Edward Pirotta’s tragic death in London at the age of 29 must have come as a terrible shock to all those, and they were many, who appreciated his great talents as an artist or sterling qualities as a friend. He was open sincere and loyal.

There was never any nonsense or pretence about him or his art. Sincerity and solidarity characterised the man, as they marked his works. Pirotta had obviously the qualities that would have made him a great artist had been given a longer lease of life.
