On Her Shoulders, a documentary by Alexandria Bombach about Nadia Murad, a 23-year-old Yazidi who survived genocide and sexual slavery by Islamic State fighters in Mosul in 2014, will be screened tomorrow at Spazju Kreattiv Cinema, Valletta.
Murad was abducted with other Yazidi women when their home village of Kocho in Sinjar, northern Iraq, was attacked by Isis. Captured alongside her sisters, she lost six brothers and her mother.
Since 2015, Murad has been working to bring Isis before the International Criminal Court on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. Telling her story to the world has thrust this ordinary girl on the international stage as her people’s voice.
On December 10, Murad will receive the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize which she was rewarded jointly with Congolese gynaecologist Denis Mukwege in October.
documentary traces Murad’s incredible journey to offer an inside look at modern political advocacy – and a challenge to viewers yearning to effect their own change.
The screening will take place at Spazju Kreattiv cinema tomorrow at 7.30pm. It is supported by UNHCR Malta as part of ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’ – an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls.
