A Żebbuġ man accused of trying to run over two police officers was granted bail on Sunday after a court heard that nobody was injured in the incident.

Robert Fiteni, 39, was stopped by police officers on Triq Diċembru 13 in Marsa on Saturday at around 3pm.

As officers approached his vehicle, Mr Fiteni – who was allegedly driving without a valid licence or insurance – attempted to drive off.

Police officers quickly stopped the man and arrested him.

Mr Fiteni was arraigned in court on Sunday afternoon and charged with attempted grievous bodily harm of two police officers, resisting arrest, threatening officers and driving without a valid licence or insurance.

He denied the charges and his lawyer Franco Debono told the court that his client had simply panicked in the heat of the moment.

Inspector Matthew Galea told the court that nobody had been injured in the incident and did not object to bail.

Magistrate Simone Grech granted Mr Fiteni bail on the condition that he signed a bail book three times a week, remained indoors between 7pm and 7am, paid a €2,000 and personal guarantee of €500.

Lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri were defence counsel.
