Nine schools are taking part in a pilot project on the teaching of storytelling skills to pupils to help them gain confidence and fluency in spoken language, and as a way of raising the standards of teaching and learning of reading and writing across the curriculum.

The project involves the use of Storytelling Schools, an innovative method for teaching literacy, combining oracy, creativity and the teaching of writing into a single, whole school method.

Chris Smith, director of Storytelling Schools, was recently in Malta to conduct whole school day training sessions in storytelling to over 300 primary school educators in collaboration with the National Literacy Agency.

The training was part of a three-day training course aimed at training and mentoring local educators in the Storytelling Schools methodology, standards using storytelling. Throughout the rest of the scholastic year the schools involved in the pilot project will be mentored by Maltese trainers in implementing this method with their pupils as one of their methods for teaching English and Maltese.

The schools involved in the project are St Thomas More College Marsaxlokk primary, St Ignatius College Qormi San Ġorġ primary, San Ġorġ Preca College Pietà primary, St Clare College Gżira primary, St Nicholas College Dingli primary and the Gozo College primaries in Għarb, Kerċem, San Lawrenz and Żebbuġ.
