What are qarabagħli besides courgettes or marrows?

Qarabagħli is the nickname given to a group of five friends in a new YouTube drama series, Matthew, Jason, Tyrone and Bjorn and the late Johnny, known as Johnny il-qarabagħl.

Johnny il-qarabagħl lost his life and the group dissolved as a result. But two years later, the remaining four members reunite.

Matthew, who did not get along well with Johnny il-qarabagħl, tries to replace Johnny’s role in the group by gaining control but he finds this very difficult.

Qarabagħli consists of an array of humour in Matthew’s attempts to control his friends. At the same time the series explores various life aspects including friendship and loneliness.

The series is produced by Karl Schembri, Christian Grech, Julian Galea, Alan Attard, Kurt Pawley and Clayton Mallia, all passionate about drama.

Spread over eight episodes, Qarabagħli is written, directed and edited by Karl Schembri. The leading actors are Christian Grech, Julian Galea, Clayton Mallia and Kurt Pawley. The cast also includes Alan Attard, Karl Schembri, James Sultana, Peter Galea, Anthony Ellul, Carlos Farrugia, Claudia Diacono, Rene Barun, Raisa Borg, Maria Farrugia, Charles Falzon, Rita Camilleri, Roberta Briffa, Ryan Galea, Lenies Gauci and Andrè Mangion.

The series starts on January 7 and will run every Monday for eight weeks. Episodes will also be shared on the Facebook page.
