An exhibition celebrating the association of the Order of St Michael and St George with Malta is being held at the Malta Postal Museum, Valletta, until December 6.

Established in Malta and Corfù in 1818, at the height of the British Regency period, the exhibition highlights the contribution made by Maltese and British subjects employed in the Mediterranean – service that was rewarded with honours, pageant and splendour.

A series of public lectures are being held in parallel with the exhibition at the same venue.

The last lecture, to be delivered by Edward Warrington, is about Sir Harry Charles Luke, KCMG.

Sir Harry was one of the most cultivated members of the Order of St Michael and St George, a man steeped in the chivalric traditions of the High Middle Ages, a respected medievalist, an expert on Middle Eastern affairs, an inquisitive traveller, a prolific writer. As Lieutenant Governor of Malta, he both challenged the rising nationalism and persuaded Britain to recognise Maltese as an official language.

Warrington will examine the life and work of this charming, imaginative, urbane, energetic, enigmatic and unlucky servant of the Crown Imperial.

The lecture is being given at the Malta Postal Museum, Valletta, tomorrow at 6.30pm.
