Mystery for ship’s distress call solved

The authorities at Palermo detained the Greek skipper and about a dozen crew members of the small freighter Tomazo, registered in Panama, which was allegedly caught with a large quantity of cigarettes off the north-western coast of Sicily on Monday morning.

The ship was spotted by a patrol boat of the Customs Guards from Palermo and she attempted to escape when challenged. The patrol boat opened fire, straddling the ship. The crew surrendered as the ship started to settle in the water.

Boxes said to be packed with cigarettes, were unloaded from the ship which was then towed into Palermo and the crew were detained. The Tomazo arrived in Malta on October 23 and stayed several weeks at the Marsa.
