Transport Malta will be auctioning an autographed Brazil football kit to raise funds for the Simon Schembri Blue Light Foundation

The authority acquired the shirt, autographed by the whole Brazil 2018 World Cup squad, after the national football team flew on a Malta-registered aircraft, operated by AirX Malta, last summer.

It said it had chosen to auction the shirt for the benefit of the Blue Light Foundation in recognition of the importance of the foundation's goals.

"The Enforcement section within Transport Malta boasts around one hundred officials, who face numerous dangers while performing their duties and thus, through this symbolic gesture, Transport Malta is helping this foundation achieve its aims," the authority said.

The Blue Light Foundation is a non-profit organisation that helps officials who are the first to arrive on the scene of an accident and provides moral and financial help for these officials and their families, should they get hurt while on duty.

It was set up after traffic police officer who last May lost his arm after being run over by a teenage driver in a harrowing incident while on duty in Luqa in May.

The signed shirt's auction will form part of a series of the activities organised by the foundation on December 2, including a bike ride departing from the police headquarters in Floriana at 9am and making its way to Montecristo Estates, which will host family activities, food stalls, and other attractions and entertainment.

The public will be able to view the autographed Brazil National Team Shirt before the auction, between 10am and 11.30am. The auction, led by Pierre Grech Pillow for Obelisk, will start at 11.30am in the morning. All proceeds will be passed on to the Simon Schembri Blue Light Foundation.
