Off balance

A pavement in Buġibba is in urgent need of repairs. The pavement, in Triq ir-Rebbiegħa, is in an awful state, with broken stone tiles spilling onto the street. This column continues to receive complaints about the state of pavements. Have pavements been struck off the ‘to do’ list of the relevant authorities?

Bin space

Passengers who were among the last to board a fully-loaded Air Malta plane a few days ago tried desperately to find some empty room in the overhead storage space where to place their hand luggage. At one point, a man spotted some space and was lifting the luggage when he was abruptly stopped by the ‘flight manager’ and informed that he wanted to use that space to store his own luggage. Does the client/passenger not still come first?

Corner landfills

The fact that some residents remain unsure on which day they should prepare the different waste bags (and bulky items) for collection should not serve as an excuse to dump them at the nearest corner, as this picture taken in St Pius Street, Sliema, proves some are prone to do. Many corners in Sliema, and, surely, elsewhere too, continue to be used as mini-landfills.

Capital eyesore

It’s nearing the end of its reign but Valletta is still the European Capital of Culture. It is, therefore, doubly worrying that one should spot accumulated rubbish in such a prominent area as Tritons Square. On the side of the fountain are white railings overlooking what looks like architectural remains. Regretfully, the place has ended up being a dumping site for unwanted food and drink containers. Shame on the responsible authorities but more so on the irresponsible litter bugs who have no civic pride.
