The acclaimed film The Stoning of Soraya will be screened in Malta as part of the international event '16 days of activism'.

Organised by the Malta Philosophy Sharing, the film will be screened at the Valletta Volunteer Centre, Melita Street, Valletta on Sunday, December 9 at 4pm.

Based on the 1994 book of the same name by the late French-Iranian journalist Freidoune Sahebjam,The Stoning of Soraya was banned in Iran.

When a journalist is temporarily stranded in her village, Zahra risks her life to relate the shocking events that led to the ‘legalised’ murder of her niece, Soraya, falsely accused of adultery by a husband who wished to be rid of her to marry a
14 year-old girl.

The penalty for such a crime is death by stoning, a barbaric practice condoned by Sharia law, that still prevails in some parts of the world.
