The picture shows a Gaisler’s long-eared bat released by being placed on to a tree trunk. This specimen was captured using a method called ‘mist nets’. These are commonly used in bat studies and are specially-designed fine mesh, targeting bats in flight. The material is soft enough to not damage the skin of the animals, however they get entangled in it long enough to be extracted by the surveyor. It allows a definitive identification of the species, which is not always possible when using acoustic recordings only.
