The Italian synod has just finished and the congregation of bishops has proposed an update of the liturgy in the Italian language.

Among the changes proposed there is the controversial rendering of the penultimate clause of the Lord’s Prayer. The synod has decided that “Do not lead us into temptation” is to be replaced by “Do not abandon (leave) us in temptation”.

In view of an eventual similar update in Maltese (and along these lines) the phrase “la ddaħħalniex fit-tiġrib” should be replaced by “la tħalliniex/titlaqniex fit-tiġrib”.
