Anthony Galea, an academic at the University of Malta’s Faculty of Science, recently won the JCI World Public Speaking Championship. Around 3,000 delegates attended the event held during the JCI World Congress held in Goa, India, which included various training sessions on effective communication, management and business.

Dr Galea had to deliver a three-minute presentation on the theme ‘Young people are the group with the greatest ability to motivate other young people to create positive change’. In his winning speech, Dr Galea explained the science behind climate change, and with the help of props, spoke about the need for people to be pro-active to make a difference.

Dr Galea had previously won Malta’s national JCI Malta public speaking championship in March and the European public championship held in Riga, Latvia, in which he delivered two speeches about sustainable transport and plastic pollution. This was the first time that the JCI Malta competed in the World Public Speaking Championship.

Dr Galea is passionate about science communication. He participated in this year’s FameLab International science competition and has delivered science shows in schools, science cafes, national science festivals and even the Natural History Museum in London.
