• It is important that consumer complaints are legally justified and the remedies claimed reasonable.

• The Consumer Claims Tribunal has the legal power to grant redress and compensation to consumers when their legal rights are breached.

• Only  consumers may submit a claim before the Consumer Claims Tribunal about goods or services bought or hired from traders.

• Consumers do not need to be represented by a lawyer during the Tribunal’s proceedings.

• Up to €500 for moral damages may be awarded by the Consumer Claims Tribunal.

• Both the consumer and trader are obliged to attend the Tribunal sitting. Failure to attend may lead to losing the case.

• The Office for Consumer Affairs issues Public Warning Statements against traders who do not honour the Consumer Claims Tribunal’s decisions.
