The New Victorians are giving budding musicians and songwriters the opportunity to learn more about creating their own material in an interactive jamming session this November called Rave and Behave.

In the show, there’s a competition coming up and sisters Bella and Blue are determined to win and claim their role as a support act to The New Victorians. They have just one day to come up with a show-stopping hit that will clinch them that spot. The audience will be invited to help the sisters come up with their winning track in an event that promises to get all those music makers buzzing.

Part of the ŻiguŻajg International Arts Festival for Children & Young People, Rave and Behave will see the New Victorians guiding a young audience in exploring and creating music, with some help from the pros. The event is suitable for children aged 10 and up.

Sisters Bettina and Philippa form the New Victorians and they will also play the characters Bella and Blue. They first formed the New Victorians, described as an ‘electronic indie duo’, after winning a songwriting competition back in 2011. Since then, they have released their debut album (Seeker Seeker in 2015) and made their theatrical debut the following year with Mara, a cross-disciplinary theatre production that celebrates the stories of women.

Rave and Behave is their first foray into creating events for children but the lack of experience in no way dimmed their enthusiasm. The organisers of ŻiguŻajg approached the pair and invited them to design a show that introduces children to music technology. It was the perfect fit.

“Our love for music, technology and children made it a no-brainer,” they said. They have also recently become aunts for the first time and the arrival of baby Kate has made them eager to bring the joy of music to children.

Over 45 minutes, Bella and Blue will be helping children to explore the realm of making music through technology and the show will be packed with wacky characters, plenty of audience interaction and, thanks to clever writing by Erin Carter, something for the grown-ups in the room as well.

While the show’s main goal is to introduce kids to the process of songwriting and the tools available, the real-life sisters hope that Rave and Behave will prove to be more than just a fun afternoon.

“We hope that with this show kids would learn something new about the music they listen to,” they said, adding that putting Rave and Behave together was an opportunity for them to reflect on their own journey.

The New Victorians have come along way from toy microphones and recording on cassette tapes and the shift from tinkering in Garage Band and a copy of Recording for Dummies to an album and an EP has not been easy.

Bettina and Philippa also hope that Rave and Behave will not only demystify how songs are created but will also inspire the audience to realise their own dreams.

“We wish for young girls, especially, to see women making electronic music,” they explain. “To inspire them to get creative and not to be afraid to try things.”

The New Victorians have got plenty in store for 2019, with talk of new music, gigs and theatre productions in the pipeline. For the younger audience though, Rave and Behave is sure to be an unforgettable event and one that will help young music-makers unlock their potential.

Rave and Behave takes place between November 20 and 25  in Studio A at Spazzju Kreattiv.
