Snow probably won’t fall along Merchants Street this winter, but the Christmas decorations did on Friday morning.

No one was hurt when part of the new Christmas lighting came down on tables and chairs set up outside one of the shopping street’s restaurants.

The lights came crashing down after a delivery truck knocked them over, Valletta 2018 Foundation chairman Jason Micallef said.

But an eyewitness said no delivery truck was involved and the lights collapsed on their own.

Mr Micallef said the lights, consisting of thousands of small bulbs that formed a light tunnel, were the work of Italian company Faniuolo Illuminazione – the same company that designed the baroque style lighting set up along Republic Street last year.

The culture head said the Merchant Street lighting was paid for by the Merchant Street Business Community when shop owners decided they did not want to be left out of the success of the Republic Street design.

Both streets will be lit up on Saturday.
