Nationalist councillors in Gudja want their council to go ahead with a ban on parking beyond 24 hours for non-residents, a decision which had been previously unanimously agreed by the council.

In a statement, councillors Mark Anthony Sammut and Stefan Caruana said the required bye-law was unanimously approved in July, but that Labour councillors, who form a majority in the council had changed their mind.

The council was informed by the government last month that the proposal could not be accepted since a Controlled Parking Scheme could be employed instead.

But, the councillors pointed out, Transport Malta is not accepting any requests for such schemes.

The restriction on parking by non-residents is seen as necessary because some people park their cars in Gudja for weeks, sometimes even months, when they go abroad, the councillors said.

Gudja is the closest place to the airport.

The Nationalist councillors said that on October 23, the council had agreed that once no objections had been listed by the minister for local government, the bye-law should be brought into force.

But since then the Labour councillors had performed a u-turn, and they were now saying they would await a reaction from the authorities.

The PN councillors said the ban should still be imposed as initially agreed.
