Besieged by members of her own government, Theresa May is like a lame duck stuck in a pond. I pity her. Pussyfooting around Brussels for the last two years, May’s Brexit breakthrough is still weeks away from being concluded.

Her allies say she is a skillful tactician. Yes indeed but that may not be enough to get the country through Brexit. As the national disaster that is Brexit looms close, the woman in charge is appearing hopelessly buffeted by frightening events, trapped between the implacable EU and her own party’s Eurosceptics. Senior Conservative party colleagues, exasperated with her performance so far, sneer at her both openly and anonymously for being useless, obstinate and indecisive.

Unfortunately, the divisions over Brexit left her in an impossible position from the very beginning, caught between enemies in her own party and a complex exercise in international diplomacy.

May’s deal with Brussels cannot survive. If it reaches the House of Commons, which must approve any Brexit agreement, many Conservative Eurosceptics will rebel and no one will step in to save her. Most certainly there will be uproar, chaos, talk of a second referendum and fears of “no deal”.

But still I wish her luck...
