Government to revise diesel vehicles’ circulation tax

The government is adjusting the new vehicle circulation tax announced in the budget, particularly in the case of diesel family cars which would have ended up being taxed as much as luxury cars.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said yesterday the new registration tax and circulation tax, replacing the vehicle licence, was to encourage the purchase of new, smaller and environmental-friendly cars. It was true that for some categories there would be significant increases, particularly big diesel cars. But one either had the courage to tackle the environment or act like jelly, he said.

The government had decided to review the new licence costs for certain diesel cars, bought 10 to 15 years ago by ‘ordinary’ families who had sought to save on fuel when diesel was substantially cheaper than petrol.

MLP to hold another protest over cost of living

Labour Party leader Alfred Sant yesterday described the government’s proposed changes to the Constitution as irrelevant and meaningless. The government is trying to divert the people’s attention from the problem of the cost of living, he told supporters at a protest in Valletta.

The government should increase wages, pensions and social assistance to help people meet the real rise in the cost of living, he said. Accusing the government of bringing about the increase in the cost of living, Dr Sant said a Lm1.50 wage increase wage increase – based on the retail price index – was not acceptable and that people wanted much more than this.

Steep wage rise warning

Three business bodies have warned against steep wage increases. The Malta Employers’ Association expressed concern about “a campaign by certain quarters aimed at raising expectations for unsustainable wage increases”. Wage increases which erode the competitiveness of businesses cannot be sustained and lead to an inflationary vicious circle with serious economic consequences, the association said.

Soviet Med fleet to stay

The Russian newspaper Izvestia has declared that Russia is a Mediterranean power and has  implied that the Russian naval presence in the Mediterranean would be maintained.

Meanwhile there is no confirmation of reports from Brussels, where the Nato Council is in session, that there are steps “to set up a new Nato base in Malta in view of the growing Soviet threat in the Mediterranean”.

There is already, in fact, a Nato Command here – it has been established since March 15, 1953. It is of interest to note that Dr Arvid Pardo, Malta’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, in his recent speech in the first committee of the UN General Assembly which is now dealing with the item concerning the peaceful uses of the sea-bed, remarked that the Soviet draft resolution on the arms control matter, submitted in the ad hoc committee, was “unacceptable” in his view.
