Revelations about the ownership of 17 Black could have "serious implications on the investigation in Daphne Caruana Galizia's assassination," MEP David Casa has argued.

In a letter to European Commissioner for Justice Věra Jourová, Mr Casa said that the revelation about the owner of 17 Black showed the importance of having an independent inquiry into the assassination of Ms Caruana Galizia.

“When Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated she was working on the biggest data leak she had ever received. She was reviewing thousands of Electrogas documents given to her by a source. That the director of Electrogas has been exposed as 17 Black’s UBO could also have serious implications on the investigation into Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination,” he wrote.

The revelations he was referring to showed a financial link between one of the shareholders of the Electrogas Power Station to the secret companies of the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Keith Schembri and Minister Konrad Mizzi.

He described the revelations as further proof of the deterioration of the rule of law in Malta, noting that Dr Mizzi and Mr Schembri would retain their posts until a magisterial inquiry was concluded.

“The magisterial inquiry in question was launched on the request of the Opposition as a measure of last resort following inaction by the politically appointed Commissioner of Police. The investigation has yet to start as it is being resisted at every turn by the very same Prime Minister claiming to be awaiting its conclusion before taking any action on the matter,” he pointed out.
