FLORIANA 1

Failla 10 pen.

MOSTA       0

Clayton Failla converted an early dubious penalty to help Floriana grab three valuable points as they returned to winning ways to halt a sequence of three defeats.

Floriana’s first significant raid yielded a breakthrough inside the first ten minutes. Tyrone Farrugia stopped a cross inside the Mosta but the ball swirled up and came off his hand. From the ensuing spot-kick, Failla buried the ball behind Andreas Vella.

On 23 minutes, the perky Cabral made space for himself on the right flank before extending Vella into a note-worthy diving save,

Still it looked evenly balanced at this stage. Zachary Brincat did well to hit on the turn but Inietim Akpan dived to smother the ball before the ensuing flag-kick was tipped out by Enzo Ruiz.

Floriana were more insistent and the strong-running Maurizio Vella saw his scorcher repelled by Vella.

The tide was gradually drifting against Floriana, chances and possession-wise.

The free-running Zachary Brincat dazzled with his pace and trickery as he outsmarted Failla but failed in his bid to place the ball between the goalkeeper and the goalpost from an angled position.

The thought of a possible repeat which brought back memories of their game against Pietá Hotspurs injected a sense of urgency in Floriana’s game but the unlucky Cabral hit the woodwork shy the hour mark.

It was the turn of the Mosta players to show their ‘chagrin’. A triangular move had substitute James Brincat cutely serving the unmarked Frendo just outside the box. His swerving shot was pushed over the bar by Akpan. The Blues’ pressure brew up and the Nigeria-born goalkeeper again distinguished himself when denying Renan on a header from Brincat’s delivery. That second save kept the Greens’ noses in front.

Cabral was voted the BOV player of the match.
