Malta’s first ever anthology of LGBTQI+ literature, comprising short poems, prose and a children’s story in Maltese and English, as well as illustrations, was recently published by a youth and student organisation called We Are.

Access to local queer literature provides a sense of acceptance

Compiled by various young local artists and writers, Kitba Queer deals with topics such as love and relationships, identity and self-discovery, and the process of acceptance, told from the perspective of Maltese youths who have passed through such experiences themselves.

Project manager Marthese Formosa said: “Having access to local queer literature in shops and libraries provides a sense of acceptance and respect. More representation will lead to more people feeling better about who they are and not feel alone.

The book was supported by Arts Council Malta – Creative Communities.
