An immigrant who was kicked out of the Ħal Far Open Centre and ended up in a scuffle with security officers was given a suspended sentence and fined €4,000 after admitting to his wrongdoing.

Mattyos Solomon Hailgeorgis, a 23-year old Eritrean national, got involved in the violent episode on Monday afternoon.

The man was arraigned on Wednesday charged with assaulting or violently resisting the officers, threatening them and slightly injuring two of them.

He was also charged with disturbing the public peace and disobeying lawful orders.

Duty magistrate Monica Vella gave him a 12-month jail term suspended for two years and ordered him to pay a €4,000 fine in monthly installments, the last falling due in 2021.
