The King George V garden in Floriana will be upgraded to include an outdoor gym, new playground equipment and improved accessibility for people with disability, Floriana mayor Davina Sammut Hili said Tuesday.

The development will cost around €400,000 and will be funded by the Development Planning Fund, Transport Minister Ian Borg said. It will also include a new turf for one of the football pitches, which will also be made more accessible, Ms Hili said.

The Development Planning fund collects money from developers when they apply for projects, Dr Borg said, adding that the fund serves to support initiatives benefiting the community.

"That is why it is important for local councils to make good use of this money which is available for the good of the communities they represent. The possibilities of initiatives eligible to be proposed are several and that is why it is unacceptable that €28 million remain unused in the fund," Dr Borg added.

Over €5 million of the fund has already been used to create other initiatives, Parliamentary Secretary for Planning Chris Agius said. He urged other local councils to come forward with their own proposals.
