The Maltese Medical Tennis Association recently hosted the 48th Congress & Tournament of the World Medical Tennis Society. The scientific sessions and bulk of tennis fixtures took place at the Marsa Sports Club with the support of the Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club and Tennis Club Kordin.
This annual event attracted around 250 medical doctors and dentists from 21 nations in a busy week of tennis tournaments, scientific lectures and a varied social programme. The men’s nations’ cup went to Germany, with Italy settling for second place.
The US won the women’s nations’ cup, with Poland being runners-up. Malta registered two major honours, with Kristie Mercieca winning silver in the women’s singles open event (medical) and Miguel Pantua winning gold in the men’s singles open event (non-medical).

The major prizes were distributed by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, MMTA president Lawrence Scerri and WMTS president Eric Goulton during a gala dinner held in the Westin Dragonara’s ballroom.
A well-attended evening reception with the participation of Dr Deo Debattista, Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer Protection and Valletta 2018, was organised at the Casino Maltese, while the opening reception took place at the Cavalieri Hotel, where guests enjoyed breathtaking views of St Julian’s bay from the top floor terrace.
The congress and tournament were ably co-ordinated by DigiGraphics International, in collaboration with the MMTA.
