The Gozo Creative Theatre Club, with the collaboration of the Gozo Regional Council, last Sunday presented the play, Il-Qassis li Rebaħ, at the Sentinella in the Citadel to mark the 220th anniversary of the Gozitan uprising against the French occupation of the island and as part of the celebrations marking ‘Gozo Day’.

The days and nights between June 9 and October 28, 1798, were a period of uncertainty and tribulations for the people of Gozo who put their trust in their archpriest Saverio Cassar – Il-Qassis li Rebaħ – a fact that proved to be very significant in the successful outcome of the arduous venture.

The play is based on the historical novel written by George Scicluna in the early 1950s and has recently been adapted for the stage by Joseph W. Psaila. Around 40 actors (pictured above) took part.
