At a recent ceremony in London a team of students from Gozo College Middle School won the Community Impact Award of the Water Explorer project, supported by the HSBC Water Programme.
The team, called Misty, was competing against 11 national winners from Ireland, Spain, Italy, UK, Poland, Switzerland, South Africa, Turkey, Germany, and France. These had been selected as the respective countries’ national winners from among 3,500 other teams from 12 countries, including 26 other teams from Malta and Gozo.
The aim of the Water Explorer project is to recognise and support teams from schools that raise awareness about the importance of water and taking actions to tackle the issue of water stress.
Among the initiatives the Misty team had taken during the previous scholastic year were the promotion of seasonal and local-based recipes, including the use of carob and wild plants, book swaps, taking part in the Walk for Water campaign to raise money for installation of water pumps in Africa, the distribution of hippo bags, information leaflets and travel cups to curb single use plastics, the installation of water butts to collect roof water run-offs, and growing their own crops.
The overall Water Explorer winners for 2018 were a team called Ecole Cerniat from Switzerland. Besides the HSBC Water Programme, the Water Explorer project is also supported by the HSBC Malta Foundation and Catch the Drop Campaign in collaboration with Għajn - Water Conservation Awareness Centre.
