Abba has the most remarkable effect on people. Regardless of generation, sex or even music tastes, an Abba song has the ability to get almost anyone up dancing – or will at least shift their mood and make them smile.

It’s with that in mind that I was thrilled to learn that Abba is – for the first time in 35 years – back in the recording room and making new material. But, seeing I can’t wait that long, I was even more pleased to discover that Abba Revival – the UK’s most-awarded Abba tribute act – would be jiving into Malta for a one-night-only charity event in the Gianpula Main Room on November 9 to raise funds for the Save Valletta Skyline appeal.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be returning to Malta,” smiles John, who plays the role of Benny. “We were so well looked after last time around, and found everyone to be so friendly. Plus there are some serious Abba fans on the island, so that’s always fun.”

John explains that Abba Revival has been around since 2007, when he and the other three members – Lisa (who plays Anni Frid), Nina (Agnetha) and Marcus (Björn) – got together and decided the idea of a tribute band was something they would enjoy developing. “It was always clear to us that Abba’s popularity was immense and, along with our love for the band’s music, that gave us the passion to create a well-produced show. Plus, we’re actually pretty similar to the band members themselves! So that’s how Abba Revival was born.”

Of course, the band members have no qualms about why Abba’s music still manages to play to packed houses, even so many years after it was first released. “The songwriting talents of Benny and Bjorn are like no other in the music industry,” Marcus says. “They have the ability to create catchy, memorable melodies which are loved by all generations. The songs have such great depth and production, with many having an upbeat, feel good vibe that can’t help but put you in a good mood. Why wouldn’t we want to play them? It’s such fun watching the crowd get going and enjoying these songs, especially as they usually bring back such wonderful memories for people.”

Having played Abba for over 10 years, the members of Abba Revival have now become stars in their own right, with their own following. As a result, they have toured almost globally, including to venues in Europe, the Middle East and, most recently, Abba’s very own Sweden.

“There have been so many brilliant moments,” John continues. “We once turned up to a gig to find that it was actually the birthday party for a well-known celebrity! We had no idea as she had given a false name. We also love the fun that comes with the job – such as wearing these fabulous costumes day after day. I feel so lucky to be part of the band. The only low point is being away from home for long periods, as we are on the road a lot. Sometimes there’s just nothing like falling asleep in your own bed!”

But there definitely won’t be any falling asleep happening when Abba Revival jumps on stage here next week. Their repertoire will include all the Abba favourites – from Waterloo to Super Trooper and Money Money to Voulez Vous.

As Lisa says: “It’s not just a case of singing the songs. We have to become Abba. Every line of every song, every nuance of each verse and chorus, is ingrained in the audience’s sub-conscious and we don’t have any margin for error. I think that makes us nervous and makes sure we’re all on our toes before a show. It’s a good way to summon up the energy we need to deliver a great performance, show after show… and we love it.”

Nina, meanwhile, says it’s almost impossible to pin down a moment within the repertoire that she would highlight as ‘her favourite’ – although she describes the look of joy on people’s faces when they hear their favourite song. “For some it could be a slow song that reminds them of a treasured memory, while for others it’s that time they danced all night with their friends to Dancing Queen. We get different reactions every time, and they are all special.”

Now, each of the band members is looking forward to presenting Malta with a night of non-stop hits, and they promise to have the audience up dancing.

“It’s going to be so wonderful to be back on the island as it’s now a few years since we last performed there. Sun, sea and Abba… what could be better?” John adds.

Abba Revival perform on November 9 at the Gianpula Main Room, Rabat, to raise funds for the Save Valletta Skyline appeal.
