Birkirkara are the sole leaders of the BOV Women's League after three matches as they defeated Mosta while Mġarr United, who had won their opening two matches, fell at the hands of Hibernians in a nerve-wrecking encounter.

Defending champions Birkirkara broke little sweat to overcome Mosta's challenge as they scored five goals without reply.

The Stripes led by a goal at the end of the first 45 minutes, courtesy of a 13th-minute strike by defender Ann-Marie Said.

Nonetheless, after the interval, Melania Bajada's clan made their pressure count as they scored four other goals to seal the rout.

Stephania Farrugia doubled the scored two minutes before the hour mark.

Ylenia Carabott and Farrugia added two other goals in a span of five minutes between 65 and 70 minutes before Kelly Agius Pace wrapped up the win with the fifth a couple of minutes from time.

Hibernians had a harder task on their hands as they crossed swords with an in-form Mġarr side.

The Paolites chalked up only a point after two games and this tie provided a golden opportunity to turn the tables and kickstart their season in order to bridge the gap with leaders Birkirkara.

Neil Zarb's team opened a two-goal lead through Dorianne Theuma from the penalty spot and Brazilian player Vitoria Macedo.

Yet, the Greens staged a reaction and levelled terms after the change of ends through Malta duo Amber Grech (46) and Brenda Borg (72).

However, Hibernians had the last say through Theuma whose effort hit the base of the net to seal the victory 12 minutes from time.

Elsewhere, Kirkop United registered their first victory of the campaign with a convincing 6-0 win over Fgura United. Eliana Gialanze and Isabelle Mazzitelli scored a goal each before half-time.

Estonia international Liis Pello made it 3-0 just before the hour-mark followed by a hat-trick from youngster Demi Magrin (75, 76, 86).

Meanwhile, neighbours Raiders (Luxol) and Swieqi United shared spoils in a goalless stalemate with Raiders now with three points after three straight draws and Swieqi with four from a possible of nine.
