Tarxien bagged their second successive league win when they had the better of Senglea Athletic 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium.

It was Tarxien who struck in their first real foray at goal after eight minutes.

From a Matthew Brincat free-kick, Daniel Zerafa was on hand to head past Matthew Farrugia.

Senglea tried to hit back and on 15 minutes Guillari was unlucky to see his effort coming off the bar. Roman Tchanturia was first on the rebound but was denied by the alert Andrea Cassar.

On 18 minutes, Tarxien doubled their lead when referee Etienne Mangion order a penalty after he adjudged that Marko Ivanovic had upended Michele Paolucci inside the area.

From the spot, the Italian striker blasted the ball into the net.

Things could have even got worse for the Cottonera side minutes later but Daren Falzon’s drive just scraped past the upright.

At the other end, Matias Garcia was unlucky to see his shot brush the post.

Senglea were off to a better start in the second half and they managed to pull a goal back on 56 minutes.

Leighton Grech sped clear of his marker and crossed the ball into the path of Volpini who beat Cassar from close in for his second goal in successive matches.

Senglea were now seeing more of the ball but for all their their possession they struggled to create chances to Cassar’s goal.

Their hopes of rescuing the match were all but ended nine minutes from time when Volpini received his second yellow card of the match and was subsequently dismissed.

From then on, Tarxien made the most of their numerical advantage as they easily held off Senglea’s efforts for an equaliser to grab another win against another relegation rival.
