To mark the centenary of the end of World War I, the New Choral Singers will perform during an evening of remembrance and choral music at St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, Valletta, tomorrow.

The event is dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives in World War I to secure and protect freedom and also reflects Malta’s contribution during the conflict as a place where soldiers sought respite and recuperation.

As part of the evening, the choir, accompanied by a brass and percussion ensemble set up for the event, will perform the international premiere of The Great War Symphony, written by British composer Patrick Hawes, former Classic FM composer-in-residence.

The work, which was recently premiered at London’s Royal Albert Hall, is a musical monument to all those who lost their lives during the Great War, with each movement of the piece depicting a different year of the war. It also uses poems written during and about the war to evoke feelings and thoughts about the sacrifices made and the strength of human will.

The singers, brass and percussion ensemble will be under the direction of the choir’s musical director Mauro Farrugia, while Wayne Marshall will be accompanying them on the organ.

Soprano Claire Debono and tenor Juan Gambina will be guest soloists.

This event will take place under the patronage of President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and in collaboration with Festi Ċelebrazzjonijiet Nazzjonali and the pro-cathedral.

The New Choral Singers’ evening of remembrance and choral music will take place at St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, Valletta, tomorrow at 7.30pm. Patrons are asked to be seated by 7.20pm. Admission is free and no reservation is required. There will be a retiring collection in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation.
