Congratulations to the Victoria local council for flooding the main thoroughfare, Republic Street, with continuous piped operatic music on October 27. The sublime sound transformed my mundane, customary shopping trip into a meaningful, rich experience.

Peace, calm and grace pervaded the atmosphere and, certainly, I soon felt their benefits to my own spirits. As I walked past the opera houses, the irrefutable logic of piping opera on to the streets of Victoria hit home.

One was richly reminded of the unique cultural integrity of Gozo’s capital city, something for us to be proud of and, surely, a distinct touristic attraction.

Several ‘tracks’ were uncomfortably loud, however, and made conversation difficult. This was strongly felt by all I spoke to.

I so hope that piped opera is to become a regular feature of Saturdays in Victoria and the council turns it down a bit.
