Call me obtuse but I fail to see the connection between dogs and human embryos, apart from the rather fatuous observation that neither can vote in general elections (October 20).

Making the chaining of dogs illegal is certainly a step in the right direction but we still have a very long way to go in the fight to eradicate the wanton cruelty to animals we see all around us, in both Malta and Gozo.

The fight for the protection of the unborn child and the fight to eradicate animal cruelty are two separate issues. A victory for one campaign must not automatically be regarded as a slight to the other. Both camps must fight unceasingly for what they strongly believe in and carry on fighting despite the ‘slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’.

That is democracy.
