Six semi-finalists have made it through to the final round of  the Malta Social Impact Awards, to be held on November 15.

Organised by the Gasan Foundation and Inspirasia Foundation, the Malta Social Impact Awards aims to create opportunities for projects that have a positive social impact on Malta .

All the shortlisted projects are mentored through to the final stage of the awards. The finalists have now been paired with a CEO through VISTAGE – an executive coaching company - for further mentoring in preparation for the final event.

The finalists will pitch their projects to the panel of judges as well as the audience, and the winners will be awarded a grant as well as further non-financial support from some of Malta’s leading businesses.

Over the previous two years, the Malta Social Impact Awards together with the support of local businesses and individuals, has given close to €250,000 in financial and non-financial support to 7 local projects. Since winning the awards, these projects have already made a positive impact on Malta by changing the lives of over 1,000 individuals.

Financial grants for this year’s winners will be provided by both organising foundations – Inspirasia Foundation and the Gasan Foundation, as well as MeDirect, Sigma iGaming and REMAX. The sponsors for the non-financial support in the form of pro bono and mentoring services include Vistage, TAKEOFF, PwC, Firstbridge, WH Partners and ZAAR Crowdfunding.

Project Użu - submitted by #Zibel

The aim of this project is to change the way people consume water whilst sustaining the NGO’s activities. Project Użu is aimed at reducing plastic bottle use by installing a network of water vending machines for reusable bottles. The profits from these machines will go towards funding the #Zibel NGO and its activities such as awareness, education, cleaning of Malta’s sea and other solutions. Water is the biggest generator of plastic bottle waste across the world. Buy water, clean the sea – a self-sustaining system to ensure #Zibel is able to deal with the incoming plastic waste from the sea for years to come and find more solutions to emerging issues.

RUSH - Renal Unit Support Health Hub - submitted by Lifecycle Malta

Through the RUSH project, LifeCycle Malta Foundation aims to implement a holistic, comprehensive support system for local renal patients. The project will make use of various revenue streams, such as cultural trips, trekking events, the annual Lifecycle Challenge, fitness sessions, awareness days, and nutrition lectures for the funding of a freely available network of professional support. Support will be offered from both a psychological and physical perspective and will be made freely available to all renal patients.

Step Up for Parkinson's - submitted by Step Up for Parkinson’s

Step up for Parkinson’s is a voluntary organisation that offers free specialised movement classes for people with Parkinson’s disease (PWPs) and their caregivers/partners. International research programmes – particularly over the last decade – have indicated that PWPs’ symptoms benefit greatly from regular dance classes. A pilot project with eight patients in 2016 showed the beneficial nature of such classes and this has been followed up with a greatly enlarged service across Malta. The project now aims to generate definitive clinical evidence regarding the benefits of dance classes for PWPs and their caretakers, increase the number of participants that can benefit from regular, semi-weekly sessions and create a sustainable entity.
