Malta’s history and landscape  are a source of inspiration for artist Jacqui Agius and she admits that visiting a new location always proves to be an intense experience.

This is evident from her latest watercolour paintings, currently on display at the Marina Hotel Corinthia Beach Resort.

Ms Agius portrays familiar scenes – such as fishing boats at Marsaxlokk, boathouses at Spinola Bay, bathers at Golden Bay, the Grand Harbour, Pjazza Regina and the fortifications in Valletta – and perhaps less common sights.

These include the Annunciation Chapel in Gozo, a chapel in Fawwara, limits of Siġġiewi, a statue of St Michael in Valletta, a colourful building in Independence Square, also in the capital city, and an alleyway in Rabat.

Life-long fascination with the interplay of light, shadow, colour and form

All these paintings, however, reflect the artist’s life-long fascination with the interplay of light, shadow, colour and form. She also likes to use vibrant colours which are representative of sunny Malta.

Ms Agius was born to an artistic father. She followed oil painting classes in secondary school and attended several courses at the School of Art in Valletta and workshops with re-nowned local artists. She held her first solo exhibition in 2007.

Jacqui Agius’s exhibition runs at the Marina Hotel Corinthia Beach Resort in St Julian’s until next Tuesday. For more information, visit Jacqueline Agius – Artist Facebook page.
