A man who slightly injured his former partner in a violent incident on Saturday was on Monday given a suspended sentence after admitting to his wrongdoing.

Emanuel Cilia, the 68-year old Birkirkara resident, was give a six-month jail term suspended for 18 months after admitting to slightly injured his ex, harassing her, causing her to fear violence, insulting or threatening her and breaching the peace. He also admitted to refusing to obey legitimate police orders.

After consulting both parties and in view of the accused’s early guilty plea, duty magistrate Rachel Montebello placed the man under supervision and protection orders for 18 months, strongly warning him to keep away from the victim and to steer clear of her place of work and home, even though the woman is understood to reside within the same block.

He was also ordered to pay a €100 fine and to bind himself to keep the good order against a €300 bond.
