I refer to the letter by Mario Galea titled ‘More dog laws’ (October 9).

I fully sympathise with him and I can imagine how much he must suffered from the pain caused by the free, savage dog attacks. He suggests four laws that should deter dogs and their owners from doing similar harm.

The laws are already there, for it is illegal to cause bodily harm no matter by what means. Those who think they can manage to escape from the attack of a heavy and strong dog as one of those that appeared in the picture accompanying the letter (a Rottweiller) and others, ought to seek help since the strength they have is immeasurable.

To know the temperament of a puppy, with all its play and licks when still a babe, you need have a pedigree and you need to know the temperament of the dogs/bitches (the genetics) used in the pedigree. Now this is near impossible since most pedigree dogs in Malta are bought from overseas.

I have been bombarded with attacks when I suggested that big, heavy and strong dogs should wear a muzzle irrespective of the breed.

The ball is in the authorities’ court.
