A new entity is to be created and made responsible for ensuring government concession agreements are observed, Finance Minister Edward Scicluna announced in the Budget speech on Monday.

The entity will monitor all concessions granted by the government - past, present and future - of whatever nature, including property concessions.

Prof. Scicluna said another entity, to be called TechMT, will be set up to market Malta as a hub for digital economy firms and those within disruptive technology spheres.

Having a distinct entity responsible for marketing Malta as a digital technology hub will ensure that the regulatory authority responsible for the sector - the Malta Digital Innovation Authority - will not also be involved in marketing and promotion.

The government will also be focusing on attracting eSports companies to set up shop in Malta, with an eye to organising major eSports tournaments in the country.

eSports - competitive video game playing - has developed from a niche sector to a massive industry generating more than half a billion dollars in revenue worldwide every year.
