For the third consecutive year, Gozo featured in the Malta Architect Awards organised by the Planning Authority and the iMNG group. Two special commendation awards in the Public Open Spaces category were awarded to architect Edward Scerri for the Xagħra network of Leisure Parks and the other to the Divine Mercy Cemetery in Nadur at Hilton Malta in St Julian’s. In the case of Nadur cemetery (pictured) the jury acknowledged the concerns regarding the environmental impact of locating a cemetery complex within an open rural setting. The jury considered that working within the special constraints of the site the architect nonetheless managed to produce a well-articulated scheme.A total of 68 projects competed for eight different award categories. The winners were chosen by a jury made up of Maltese and foreign professionals, supported by technical teams, made up of experts in each of the fields represented by the award categories.
