A man and a woman arrested on Friday morning after being found in possession of cocaine on arrival in Malta from Paris have been remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to the charges.

Hendrick Albert Asaitie, 35, and Brigitte Clarissa Moese, 20, were charged on Saturday morning with importing cocaine. Born in the Caribbean but holding a French passport, the two were found in possession of 2kgs of cocaine when they were arrested. The packets of cocaine were found in the woman’s underwear, the prosecution noted.

Inspectors Kevin Pulis and Mark Anthony Mercieca, prosecuting, described how the police had informed them that drugs were going to be imported to Malta.

“We followed them and after leaving the hotel and arriving in Sliema, the police decided to intervene. The pair took a taxi together and even checked into the hotel together,” they said.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Gabriella Vella, ordered the freezing of the pair’s assets.

Lawyers Mario Mifsud and Lennox Vella, who appeared for the accused, did not request bail.
