Drawing on the timeless themes of forsaken love, loss and longing, Orfeo & Majnun – an interdisciplinary project in two parts connecting the Middle Eastern legend of Layla and Majnun and the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice – will be shown today at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.

Orfeo & Majnun is an exciting, new retelling expressed through multiple textures.

Audiences can expect some delightful surprises during the show, thanks to a shadow screen and puppets manned by participating puppeteers  who will be bringing the animal puppets to life during the performance.

The narration interweaves Maltese, English and Arabic, while the score combines Western and Eastern styles.

Shadow puppetry is an ancient theatre form with ritual roots in Asian cultures and is also the analogue forerunner of modern digital animation movies.

This poetic music theatre also encourages local citizens to take part in creative workshops, under the artistic direction of Martina Winkel and Airan Berg.

The first part of the performance celebrates co-creation with associative stories and a cast of animal puppets conceived during workshops. The second part continues to unfold a unique and uniting spectacle, a theatre of emotions.

Interdisciplinary by nature, Orfeo & Majnun involves multiple art forms, referring to current social, cultural, and urban challenges. It also involves communities, professional and citizen artists and groups at risk of social isolation or exclusion.

Orfeo & Majnun is being held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre today at 8pm. For tickets visit http://tickets.valletta2018.org .
