Two newly-built lanes connecting the Marsa Junction to Qormi will be opened to traffic as of Saturday morning, Infrastructure Malta announced.

Infrastructure Malta expects the two new lanes to help traffic heading down from the Addolorata cemetery to Marsa flow more smoothly. Until now, motorists had to stop by the government printing press and give way to oncoming vehicles. Now, traffic will keep moving down two dedicated lanes, one towards the Turkish cemetery and the other towards Valletta on Triq Aldo Moro.

The two lanes on Triq il-Gvern Lokali will serve as the only access to Qormi’s Triq il-Marsa from all northbound roads converging at the Marsa junction.

This means that all road users heading to Qormi from Corradino in Paola, Vjal Santa Luċija and Triq Giuseppe Garibaldi will need to use the two new lanes, which will pass by the public lotto department offices and government printing press to reach the area by the Turkish cemetery.

Triq il-Gvern Lokali will also temporarily connect Triq Giuseppe Garibali to Triq Aldo Moro towards Valletta. That connection will eventually be superceded by the seven flyovers being built as part of the Marsa Junction projection.

In its statement, Infrastructure Malta said that the second phase of the Marsa Junction project was nearing completion and that phase three, which will include the building of the flyovers, would start before the end of the year.

The first phase of the €70 million project saw old factories demolished. Phase two involved rebuilding Triq il-Gvern Lokali and Triq Guze Gatt, as well as widening Triq Aldo Moro to 10 lanes.

Rebuilt roads were constructed with underground distribution networks for water, electricity, sewage and telecommunication services, as well as layers to reduce water infiltration.
