At about 3pm on October 16, 2017, Malta was shocked when news spread like wildfire that journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed by a car bomb a few metres from her residence in Bidnija. She left to mourn her loss not only her family and friends but all those thousands who followed her blog.

Caruana Galizia was brutally murdered because she exposed corruption.

Someone wanted to silence her in the most atrocious way.

A whole year has gone by and justice has not yet been done. She was a very clever journalist and her network of informers was vast.

She had the guts to point her finger and expose wrongdoings, which made some uneasy in their chair. She exposed secret companies and accounts and for such exposures she was harassed and threatened. But the threats did not silence her.

“There are crooks everywhere. The situation is desperate.” These were the last words she wrote on her blog. How right she was.

Today, we are still inundated with hate speeches and/or writings, if not more than ever. It is there for all to see and hear, even on certain TV stations. Freedom of expression is used by some to send messages of hate to one’s political adversary and the police seem to be too busy elsewhere to take any action.

Over the past 365 days, Malta has been put in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. Everyone is crying out for justice to be done but it seems the authorities are deaf to the people’s outcry. Maybe, according to Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s way of reasoning, “only few people mourned her”. Shame on him and the like!
