Christopher Muscat has been appointed Maestro di Cappella of the Metropolitan Chapter.

The Curia said in a statement his role is to prepare and direct the music and choir during liturgical celebrations at St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina and St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta. He also has to promote liturgical music within the Malta Archdiocese.

Mro Muscat, who is a composer and director, has been involved in sacred music since he was 10 years old when he was a St John’s Co-Cathedral choir member.
He is a University of Surrey Master’s graduate in music.

In 2004, he started directing the Jubilate Deo choir, which was set up in 1974 at the Naxxar parish and which is set to become the residential choir of St John’s Co-Cathedral and the Archdiocese.

He conducted several concerts on special occasions at St John’s Co-Cathedral, the Mdina Cathedral, Westminister’s Cathedral in London, and St Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.

His works have been played at important centres in Europe, Tunisia, China and the United States.

Over the years, he has collaborated and worked with several orchestras, choirs and international artists including the Medici String Quartet, i Virtuosi di Praga, composers Karl Jenkins and Marco Frisina, the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and the Coro Sinfonico di Milano Giuseppe Verdi.

He is a member of the World Council of Choirs and is regularly invited to judge international vocal, instrumental and composing competitions.

For many years he served as artistic director and president of the Malta International Choir Festival.
